Head Children’s Librarian- Greensburg Hempfield Area Library

The Greensburg Hempfield Area Library (GHAL) is requesting applications for a full-time Children’s Librarian. This is a 35-hour workweek position requiring evenings and Saturdays as needed. About GHAL: The Greensburg Hempfield Area Library, located approximately 30 miles Southeast of Pittsburgh in the city of Greensburg, Pennsylvania, is the public library for approximately 70,000 people. While GHAL is a nonprofit corporation and has no formal legal ties to any municipality, it is recognized by the state of Pennsylvania as the public library serving the communities and citizens of the Greensburg Salem School District, Hempfield Area School District, the city of Greensburg, Hempfield Township, the boroughs and/or municipalities of Southwest Greensburg, South Greensburg, New Stanton, Hunker, Manor, and Youngwood. The library’s governing body, the Board of Trustees, is comprised of individuals who live in the library’s service areas and representatives appointed from the supporting local governments and school districts.



QUALIFICATIONS: Master’s Degree in Library Science with knowledge of children’s literature and experience in developing and presenting programs for children

  • Supervise Children’s team members to plan, prepare, conduct, and evaluate Children’s programs for children from babies to teens in our library, in outside day cares, preschools, and outreach facilities
  • Communicate effectively with Children’s staff and Library Director
  • Communicate and promote library activities to library team members, agencies, day cares and county libraries
  • Provide assistance to Library Director and Assistant to the Library Director in administrative and personnel needs of library


  • Third person in charge of library after Library Director and Assistant to the Library Director
  • As Head Children’s Librarian:
    • Plan, prepare and conduct Summer Reading program, Fall, Winter, and Spring programs, and holiday celebrations, such as Haunted Cellar and Winter Wonderland, with the Children’s staff and the Library Director
    • Track usage and attendance statistics of programs for reporting
    • Recommend appropriate children’s and young adult books, media and e-Books to purchase for the collection to the Library Director
    • Manage volunteers
    • Submit Children’s programming publicity content for marketing material, website, and social media outlets
  • Work with children and adult patrons
  • Work in a team environment with all employees, county agencies, and other libraries
  • Use software to create marketing brochures and flyers for library programs and events
  • Attend required continuing education training
  • Assume other professional duties that may be requested by the Library Director
