Position:          Coordinator of Circulation Services Full-time

Reports to:      Library Director

Hours:             35 Hours per Week

Salary:             $24,000-$32,000, commensurate with experience

General Summary:  Coordinates and oversees all circulation services activities.  Participates in the planning, implementing, and evaluation of programs, services, and goals as part of the management team.

Qualifications, Experience and Training:  Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university and a minimum of three years experience working in libraries required.  Demonstrated supervisory experience preferred.  The requirements listed as follows are representative of the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform this job successfully:

  1. Knowledge of: general office practices and procedures, library classification systems and integrated library systems (Polaris preferred), Microsoft Office software, Interlibrary loan procedures using AccessPA and OCLC, computer and iPad equipment, current social media, the principles of library practices and procedures and general bibliographic information and publishing industry.
  2. Skilled in: database searching and using integrated library systems (Polaris preferred), using Microsoft Office suite, and troubleshooting computer equipment, printers, and copiers.
  3. Ability to: be courteous and tactful with the general public, to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, establish and maintain working relationships with patrons, employees and the general public, to implement policy and procedure, to exercise initiative and judgment in completing tasks, and to maintain confidentiality.
  4. Ability to: work a flexible schedule that includes Saturdays and evenings as needed, lift and move up to 40 pounds, and to move books and materials from both higher and lower shelves, provide close attention to detail despite interruptions, to set priorities and meet deadlines, and delegate work effectively.

Essential Responsibilities:

            Circulation Services: implements and interprets policies for the circulation and use of library materials including interlibrary loan, overdue collection and patron registration; assists patrons in use of library resources and equipment; locates resources in catalog, on shelves and in resource sharing databases; handles patron complaints involving overdue materials, lost materials, damaged materials, and claimed returns; maintains patron registration files; creates and prepares brochures, fliers, notices and spreadsheets to assist users; proctors exams; assists in library’s social media presence; maintains public awareness of services, programs and collection; maintains inventory of supplies needed for department operations; coordinates book displays; receives and sorts book donations; maintains order in library stacks and seating areas; recommends items for purchase based on patron preferences and reviews; maintains currency in adult new book and audio visual sections; monitors holds list; inspects damaged library materials; checks all newly processed materials; and assists in selecting materials for acquisition and withdrawal.

Management Activities: oversees circulation staff; under direction of the Library Director,       recruits, interviews and recommends for hire circulation staff; oversees coordination of    scheduling, training, and performance review of Library Pages; oversees coordination of Library Volunteers and Jr. Volunteer programs; prepares monthly and annual statistic reports as required; reviews policies and procedures and recommends revisions as needed; serves as a member of the management team and participates in strategic planning, policy development and program outreach.

Staff Support: provides staff training as needed; maintains a neat and safe work area; maintains          adequate supplies; keeps equipment in good working order; and provides assistance to technical services and youth services staff as needed.

Continuing Education: keeps current on trends and technologies affecting circulation services through professional journals, social media, listservs, and networking; attends professional meetings, conferences and workshops to maintain professional growth and development.

Work Environment: The Murrysville Community Library, a suburban library 18 miles east of Pittsburgh, serves a population of 28,000 in Murrysville, Export and Washington Twp. It is a member of the Westmoreland County Federated Library System, an alliance of 24 member libraries serving the residents of Westmoreland County. We have a collection of 65,000 items. We have a full time staff of 5, part-time staff of 6, 4 library pages and use over 80 volunteers in a variety of ways.
